Cardamom

A cardamom (specifically Chhoti Elaichi or green cardamom, Elettaria cardamomum) is a precious and highly aromatic spice belonging to the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. Revered globally—and particularly across South Asia and the Middle East—as the “Queen of Spices,” it is celebrated for its intensely fragrant, sweet, and complex flavor profile that bridges warm, herbal, and citrusy notes.

The plant is a perennial, herbaceous leafy shrub that produces small, pale-green seed pods. Inside these protective pods lie tiny, sticky, dark brown-to-black seeds packed with volatile essential oils that give cardamom its signature punch. While the entire pod can be used to infuse flavor, grinding the inner seeds releases the strongest aroma and taste.

Nutritionally and therapeutically, green cardamom is a potent wellness aid. It is rich in essential minerals like iron, manganese, and potassium, alongside powerful antioxidants that help lower blood pressure and combat cellular inflammation. Traditionally in Ayurveda, it is heavily valued for aiding digestion, relieving gas and acidity, freshening breath instantly, and detoxifying the body.

Indispensable in both sweet and savory cooking, cardamom is a foundational ingredient in Indian garam masala, chai tea, and biryanis, as well as Middle Eastern Arabic coffee (gahwa). It is also widely used to elevate baked goods, custards, puddings, and traditional festive sweets.
